[原创]浅谈关于怎么写正规英文论文 (上)

很久以前写的东西。看到SNAKE的帖子，拿出来炒冷饭...

这篇文章好像答应过NIC鱼的 (万年拖欠的文文啊)。 虽然自己不敢说对整个过程有多了解，也很明白写作这东西实在不是可以三言两语讲得清楚的，但是上了大学后替很多人改过很多文章，其中的一些常见问题提出来说说也应该是没有坏处。

DISCLAIMER：这篇文章只针对北美学校的要求，对中国的英文科作文可能用处不大。

这上篇中先说说关于语言本身的一些常见漏洞：

1。 不要用你自己并不完全明白的词汇。 微软WORD里面有一个“查找近义词”的功能，千万不要被它误导加之滥用。 没有两个词的意思是完全相同的，它们之间的微妙差别一千本字典也列不完。 很多时候一个词被替换之后整个句子会看起来很奇怪----因为它的替身在正规的语言中不是这么用的。 也不一定说得出什么语法错误来----反正就是别扭不舒服。 还有就是如果一篇500词的文章中有475个词都是比较初级的单词，剩下的25个却是GRE单词，这篇文章看起来会非常刺眼 (特别是如果这些高深的词又用得不对)。

2。 不要口语化的词句。 比如说，不要用“but”当一个句子的开头，因为那样会造成不完整句子。 如果你一定要用“但是”来开头，用“however”或者“nevertheless"。 同理，不要用“definitely”--- 看情况用另外的词代替 (比如truly 或者 of course )。 口语中who 和 whom 已经被完全同化了，但是在作文中还是有区别的。其它的例子包括“really”、“for sure”和“nice”。

3。 印象中美国人最最最最常犯的错误就是把Your和You're/their & they're搞混。请尽可能注意。

4。 尽量使用第三人称，绝对不要用第二人称。 第一人称近来开始被有限度地接受，但是还是第三人称最为正规。

5。注意 a lot / some / a bit / a little / a few / many / much 的用法。 有的是用于可数物的，有的是用于不可数物的。

6。一个句子中各个动词的时态一定要保持一致。 我知道这说起来容易做起来难，但是如果你练出来了包你受益无穷。

the correct answer should be: i thought that the earth "was" larger than the sun. conversely, i thought that the sun "is" larger than the earth.


原來真的有阿 hugest?_?

不過一般不熟的字大家都不會用吧:o:o

都没有，刚问了CHARLOTTE。。WHO WAS DOING FACIAL MASK AND LOCKED IN HER BATHROOM:D

还有就是像"more better"这种phrase，统统杀掉。

小姐，那叫情不自禁啊……全班绝倒的说。就连老师也忍不住在笑。

"Huger" is like "gooder". XD

A ditzy high school classmate once used "gooder"....everybody laughed so hard.

刚刚search了一些IEEE的journel，里面没有一个用"we"的，不过帖子题目是关于写英文论文，我想差距就在这里吧。

IEEE 的比較engineering吧。。。
如果找些ACM的， 應該是用"we"比較多的。

前天收到的draft thesis的comment的第一条就是语言错误太多.

i once used "first and foremost" in a data management report, and my teacher crossed it out....whywhywhy????

"first and foremost"--it's a adv phrase. i cannot recognize the problem without the whole sentence which lizard whote:o:o

To me, it's incorrct. should be
i thought that the earth was huger than the sun.
the statement u claimed before was wrong as u emphasized that u THOUGHT~it doenst mean that AT THE PRESENT the earth is huger than the sun

same here. bird's explanation is correct.
it's not a truth that the earth is larger than the sun. basically a dependent clause has to choose the same tense with the main clause to avoid needless shifts. however, we use different tenses in noun or adj clause to represent different meanings in fact.

bigger is not formal...that's it~

ha~u got me.............i was thinking of this kind of situation cos I did see english ppl do the same!
precisely, it is incorrect. probably it depends on which part is more important. if u say what it was sami who told me bla bla bla, same tense within one clause. if u emphasize the stamtement whoever said that before, use different tense then....

big, large, great these 3 adj r frequently used with different specific nouns. large is formal than big in writing.
in my opinion, the sentense above should be "i thought that the earth is larger than the sun."

as for sami's example, daytime is "really" longer in summer.
no matter what tense the descriptive clause is, the following noun clause is always in the form of present one.

Nope you can't say huger...you can say bigger/larger/greater, but you can't say huger....don't ask me why. :P
